THE TULSA FITNESS SYSTEMS METHODOLOGY
A WORKOUT SYSTEM BUILT ON SCIENCE — NOT THEORY

As mentioned in our About Us page, we do things differently at Tulsa Fitness Systems because we believe different things.

For example, many gyms build their businesses on a flawed concept: Fitness is a sport. We disagree. We don’t believe fitness is a sport. Rather, we believe fitness is a methodology to prepare you for a sport if you choose.

And if your goal is to lose weight, get in shape, or just feel better about yourself, then the last thing you need is a sport. Instead, what you need is a workout system that keeps you safe and injury free.

We believe fitness shouldn’t hurt you; instead, it should bulletproof you. It shouldn’t make your joints ache; it should soothe achy joints. And exercise shouldn’t make you so sore that you are discouraged about going back to the gym; instead, you should feel alive and energized.

To that end, our system begins with science — not theory.

We incorporate 7 steps to optimum human performance:

1: Functional Movement Screen
2: Integrated Motion
3: Pillars
4: Planes of Motion
5: Lines of Force
6: Loads
7: Power

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN
TROUBLE DETECTION SYSTEM: PREVENT INJURIES BEFORE THEY HAPPEN

In 2007, the Atlanta Falcons NFL team suffered seven season-ending injuries. Just one year later, in 2008, they only had one minor injury.

Seven devastating injuries in one year; one minor injury the next. What changed? The violence of football didn’t change. The intensity of the game didn’t vary. And the quality of talent didn’t improve, either.

What changed was a shift in the team’s training focus from raw power and hulk-sized muscle development to functional strength, stability and flexibility.

And it all started with a Functional Movement Screen. Think of a Functional Movement Screen as a trouble detection system designed to prevent injuries before they happen.

It’s a set of seven different movement patterns we use to ‘screen’ your body’s ability to function properly. These movement patterns place you in ‘functional positions’ testing to see if you have specific muscular weaknesses or a right side/left side strength imbalance.

Raw strength does not always translate to functional strength. But the opposite is almost always true: Ignoring whole-body, functional strength and stability in favor of isolating muscle mass and power is a perfect storm for disaster. Just ask the Atlanta Falcons.

The beauty of the FMS is that it provides a clear baseline so we can track your progress going forward. And it’s just one more way Tulsa Fitness Systems thinks different.

INTEGRATED MOTION
MOVE TO FUNCTIONALLY STRENGTHEN

After we’ve put you through the Functional Movement Screen, the next step in the Tulsa Fitness System is to get your body moving in an integrated, unified way.

Integrated motion means your body is functioning properly during exercise, keeping you safe while increasing your abilities.

The remarkable thing about the human body is that it can be trained to be dysfunctional, and it’s happening every day in gyms all across Tulsa and beyond. Improper exercise routines do more harm than good, setting a person up for injury and a lifetime of dysfunction.

PILLARS
SIX MOVEMENTS TO A BETTER BODY

We’ll introduce you to six core movement patterns that include:

1) Push
2) Pull
3) Rotation
4) Locomotion
5) Elevation Changes (to include squat and lunge), and
6) A Combination of all the above.

A complete training program should cover all of them. Why? Because this is how you live your real life.

Just think about how you use all these movements in picking up a child and placing them in a car seat. You’d use every one of these movements in doing so.

If your real life demands these movements, then why do most fitness programs ignore them, and train you otherwise?

PLANES OF MOTION
THREE PLANES OF MOTION, OR A COMBINATION OF THEM ALL

When you join Tulsa Fitness Systems, your body will learn new skills, how to move safely in all directions, and how to function in all planes of motion.

Those planes of motion include the sagittal, frontal, transverse, and multi-planar. Don’t worry; you don’t need to know all the terminology. Just know that we know.

LINES OF FORCE
THREE PLANES OF MOTION, OR A COMBINATION OF THEM ALL

You’ll appreciate how your body becomes stronger and more functional when including these lines of force into your workout: vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and multi-vector movements.

Again, there’s no need to memorize all this (unless you want to), because Tulsa Fitness Systems’ coaches are highly trained professionals.

LOADS
HOW YOU BECOME STRONGER

We’ll challenge you with different kinds of loads (weights, rubber bands, medicine balls, etc.), that will keep your body guessing. One moment, you may be using both arms and legs in a lift, and the next you may be using only one limb.

Using different types of loads work together to help you lose weight, get in shape, energize your body, and change your life.

POWER
INTENSITY

Your body can expend energy slowly or quickly. That’s why you should be trained to do both efficiently and all points in-between.

If you’d like to go on a jog with your grandchild, that’s one thing. But if you need to sprint to your grandchild to stop her from running out into traffic, that’s another thing entirely.

OPTIMUM HUMAN PERFORMANCE
THE RESULT OF GOOD SCIENCE

How would your life change — if suddenly — you were 10, 25, even 50 pounds lighter than you are right now?

How much better would you feel if you were to suddenly regain the strength and energy you had 10 or 20 years ago? And how much more alive would you feel if you woke up with youthful enthusiasm? Well, I assure you, it’s not science fiction … it’s science.

And the moment you step in Tulsa Fitness Systems, you’ll start experiencing the difference a science-based training program makes.
But it’s not all science. It’s also fun. You’ll have fun first and sweat second as you work your way through our circuit-style, interval training protocols.

There will be bursts of work combined with periods of rest to challenge your body to become more functional.

MYZONE HEART RATE TRACKER
THE POWER OF YOUR HEART IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS

Imagine this: Every heartbeat tracked. Every calorie counted. Every movement recorded.

That’s the power of our Myzone heart rate tracker.

When using the Myzone technology, you’ll never wonder if your workouts are being productive because the award-winning wearable tracks everything.

All your exercise effort is instantly displayed on a monitor for you to see in real time, so you know how hard you are working.

It’s a brilliant, personal technology that rewards your effort by turning your workout into a game — a game of vibrant colors.

On the monitor, you’ll not only see your heart rate (and the color associated with on our scoreboard), but you’ll also see the heart rates of your teammates as well.

The objective is for all participants to match their heart rates to Myzone’s five simple, personalized color-coded zones in an attempt to earn Myzone Exercise Points (MEPs).

The longer you stay in the prescribed zone, the higher your score.

The more closely you match the color to your fitness effort, the higher your score.

This fun, gamification of your workouts helps keep you excited about coming back for more, trying to improve on your previous workouts.

It’s genuinely an absorbing, entertaining, and highly motivating workout, regardless of your current fitness level.

At the end of each workout, you’ll receive your percentage score, keeping the game fun.

Owning a Myzone heart rate tracker places the power of your heart in the palm of your hands.
